Short vacation to prepare for the Final Count Down

11 April 2010 | Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls
This time it was much quicker to add a new message on this website. Reason is that I had a short vacation. Actually I just took 2 days off and went a long weekend to...Zimbabwe! The idea came only 3 days before I left, as I felt that I really needed a break. After counting the days - 4 weeks without a day off - the decision that a break was made. Booked my flight last Monday and 3 days later I was crossing the border to Zimbabwe.
From the airport by taxi to a backpackers. That is still the cheapest way to spent the night and always a good way to meet people.
The first thing on Friday was of course my walk to the Victoria Falls. Impressive! And so much water! Really enjoyed the natural power and the watching at the massive amount of water falling meters and meters deep.
For saturday I booked a trip to Botswana. Never thought earlier that I ever will cross that border. Living in Europe, this was always far away, deep in Southern Africa. But it was just around the corner from Vic Falls. Actually there are 4 countries together: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. In Botswane I did a Game Drive and a water safari. It was great to be outdoors, seeing Elephants and Hippo's, Giraffes and Springbock. And it was special to be in a small boat, passing all the animals really close.
Victoria Falls village is a small African village. More African than here in South Africa. But I feel that I'm getting used to be in the south, so I was really happy to see something new again.
And while beeing there and spending time with people, I felt proud about my job. Beeing in my daily routine here, running to meetings, preaparing papers, it started to get normal for me to work with the World Cup. But while beeing out of this, meeting people from Europe and getting some distance to the job it started to get exciting and special again. Exact the right feeling to start again tomorrow and finish what I started here!
And I'm sure that there will be another trip for me to the Victoria Falls after the World Cup. To go rafting when there is lower water and to maybe travel from here to Botswana and Namibia. But you never know...
